Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is essentially a form of frequency division multiplexing (FDM) applied to optical signals, using different wavelengths of light instead of radio frequencies.

Conceptual Relationship

WDM and FDM share the same fundamental principle: multiple independent signals are transmitted simultaneously over a single medium by assigning each signal a distinct carrier. In FDM, these carriers are different frequencies in the radio or electrical spectrum, while in WDM, the carriers are different wavelengths of light in an optical fiber. Since wavelength and frequency are inversely related through the speed of light, WDM can be considered a specialized optical implementation of FDM .

How WDM Works

  • Multiplexing: At the transmitter, multiple data streams are assigned unique wavelengths (colors) of laser light and combined using a multiplexer.
  • Transmission: The combined optical signal travels through a single fiber without interference between channels.
  • Demultiplexing: At the receiver, a demultiplexer separates the wavelengths back into individual data streams . WDM can be implemented as coarse WDM (CWDM) with fewer, widely spaced channels or dense WDM (DWDM) with many closely spaced channels, allowing very high total data rates over a single fiber .

Differences from Traditional FDM

  • Medium: WDM operates exclusively over optical fibers, while FDM is commonly used in radio, coaxial cables, and other analog channels.
  • Signal Type: WDM uses light waves, whereas FDM typically uses electrical or radio frequency signals.
  • Capacity: Optical fibers have extremely wide bandwidths, allowing WDM to support tens or hundreds of channels simultaneously, far exceeding typical FDM systems .

Summary

While WDM and FDM differ in medium and signal type, they are conceptually equivalent: both divide the available spectrum into separate channels to transmit multiple signals simultaneously. WDM is therefore a form of FDM adapted for optical communications, leveraging the relationship between wavelength and frequency to maximize fiber capacity .
