Proper fiber optic cable routing involves careful planning of physical paths, adherence to bend radius and handling guidelines, and correct configuration of ONTs and routers for optimal performance.

Physical Routing Considerations

Cable Type Selection: Choose indoor or outdoor fiber optic cables based on the environment. Indoor cables are flexible, fire-resistant, and suitable for offices or homes, while outdoor cables are designed to withstand moisture, temperature extremes, and physical stress, often with armored protection for direct burial or aerial deployment . Routing Paths: Plan routes to minimize sharp bends, excessive tension, or pinching. Use conduits for underground installations (typically 1–2 meters deep) and avoid areas prone to mechanical damage. Aerial cables should be mounted securely on poles or building structures . Bend Radius and Handling: Maintain the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer to prevent signal loss or fiber breakage. Avoid twisting, squeezing, or pinching cables. Use plastic clamps with large surface areas and apply gentle pressure when securing cables . Connector Protection: Keep connectors clean and free from dust or scratches. Use optical-grade wipes or swabs and canned air for cleaning. Always handle connectors by the plastic housing to avoid contamination .

Network Device Configuration

Optical Network Terminal (ONT): The fiber line terminates at the ONT, which converts optical signals into electrical signals for your router. Place the ONT close to the fiber entry point to reduce signal degradation . Router Connection: Connect the ONT to a fiber-ready router using a high-quality Ethernet cable (Cat6a or higher) to preserve gigabit or multi-gigabit speeds. Use the router's WAN port for the connection . Configuration Settings: Access the router's admin panel via its IP address (commonly 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). Enter ISP credentials if required. Enable Quality of Service (QoS) settings to prioritize critical traffic such as VoIP or video conferencing . Testing and Troubleshooting: After installation, verify signal stability and speed. Check ONT and router status lights, and ensure connectors are properly seated. Improper connections can cause significant signal degradation .
