The I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) interface is a bidirectional, two-wire communication protocol consisting of a serial data line (SDA) and a serial clock line (SCL). It allows a single master device, such as a microcontroller, to communicate with one or more slave devices, including optical sensors, EEPROMs, or ADCs, using unique 7-bit or 10-bit addresses . Data is transmitted in byte packets, with each byte followed by an acknowledge (ACK) bit from the receiving device . Standard I2C speeds include 100 kHz (standard mode), 400 kHz (fast mode), and up to 1 MHz (fast mode plus), with higher-speed modes requiring specialized circuitry .
I2C lines are typically open-drain, meaning devices can pull the line low but require external pull-up resistors to pull the line high . This allows multiple devices to share the bus without contention. In optical modules, the SDA line is used for both sending and receiving data, while the SCL line synchronizes communication . Clock stretching is supported, allowing slower devices to hold the SCL line low until they are ready to continue communication .
For applications where ground loops or electrical noise are a concern, optical modules may implement optical isolation using optocouplers. This isolates the master and slave devices electrically while allowing data to pass via light signals . Typically, one optocoupler channel is used for the SCL line, and two channels are used for the SDA line to handle bidirectional communication.
