Overview of Optical Modules

Optical modules, also known as optical transceivers or optical link modules, are compact devices that serve as the physical bridge between electronic devices and fiber optic cables, enabling data transfer at speeds up to 800 Gbps over long distances . They operate at the physical layer of the OSI model and are essential in telecom, data center, and enterprise networks .

  1. Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA): Converts electrical signals into optical signals using a laser diode (LD) or LED.   3. Driver and Functional Circuits: Control the modulation of the light source and amplification of received signals, ensuring stable and accurate data transmission.

  • SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable): Common for short to medium distances.
