Hooks for tying fiber optic cables

Fiber optic cables can be secured using specialized hooks, brackets, and hook-and-loop fasteners that protect the cable while providing stable support.

Types of Hooks and Brackets

Pole and wall-mounted hooks are designed to support fiber optic cables on vertical structures. These are typically made from steel, aluminum, or durable plastic and are engineered to withstand environmental factors like wind, ice, and UV exposure. They prevent sagging, maintain proper cable clearance from power lines, and reduce the risk of tangling. ADSS drop cable brackets and poleline hooks allow cables to be wrapped neatly around them and are usually attached with bolts or clamps for a secure anchor point . Cable clamps and support brackets are used to maintain the minimum bending radius of fiber optic cables, preventing damage during installation. These can be part of a strain-relief kit and are available from manufacturers like Panduit and Richco .

Hook-and-Loop Fasteners

For indoor or patch cable management, hook-and-loop fasteners such as SPEEDWRAP® FIBERtie™ strips provide a gentle, reusable, and adjustable solution. These fasteners are made from VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap® materials, which are wide, flexible, and safe for fiber optic cables. They can be wrapped around cable bundles and secured onto themselves, allowing repeated use without leaving adhesive residue or damaging the fibers. They are available in multiple colors to help with cable identification .

Additional Cable Management Options

Other options include zip-tie-style cable ties, P-clips, and self-adhesive cable clips, which can secure fiber optic patch cables or small-diameter cables to surfaces. Releasable zip ties and loop clamps allow for easy adjustments and organization on optical tables or work surfaces .

Key Considerations

  • Material: Choose corrosion-resistant materials for outdoor use.
  • Bend radius: Ensure hooks or ties do not force cables to bend beyond their minimum radius.
  • Reusability: Hook-and-loop fasteners are ideal for temporary or adjustable installations.
  • Load support: Outdoor brackets must support the cable weight and environmental stress.
  • Cable identification: Colored fasteners can help organize multiple fiber types. Using the appropriate hooks, brackets, and fasteners ensures safe, organized, and durable fiber optic cable installations for both indoor and outdoor networks.
