Splitter Connection and Fiber Patches

Optical splitters in PON networks are connected using centralized or cascaded architectures, with fiber patching following strict routing and management standards to ensure signal quality and network reliability.

Splitter Connection Methods

1. Centralized Splitting: In centralized splitting, a single optical splitter is placed in a fiber distribution box or central location. One input fiber connects directly to the Optical Line Terminal (OLT), while multiple output fibers connect to Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) at user premises. Common split ratios are 1:32 or 1:64, allowing efficient use of fiber resources and simplified maintenance, making it ideal for dense urban areas . 2. Cascaded Splitting: Cascaded splitting involves multiple stages of splitters between the OLT and ONTs, typically represented as “OLT → Splitter 1 → Splitter 2 → ONU.” This method helps manage optical loss, maintain signal quality, and reduce costs. Usually, a maximum of two splitting stages is recommended to ensure effective network performance . 3. Splitter Types:

  • PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) Splitters: Provide uniform output power across all ports, suitable for large splits like 1:32 or 1:64. They are compact, durable, and maintain low insertion loss even in harsh environments .
  • FBT (Fused Biconical Taper) Splitters: Offer customizable, uneven splits (e.g., 10/90, 20/80) and are cost-effective for small splits like 1:2 or 1:4 .

Fiber Patch Management

1. Patch Cable Routing: Patch cables connect splitter outputs to user fibers. Proper management ensures minimal signal loss and easy maintenance. Key practices include:

  • Maintain a minimum bending radius of 400 mm.
  • Avoid connecting two patch cables without proper flanges.
  • Route fibers horizontally below the Optical Distribution Module (ODM) and vertically to the terminal, ascending only once inside and outside the ODF frame . 2. Cable Length and Organization:
  • Patch cables should have a surplus of no more than 500 mm.
  • All cables must be neatly arranged inside ODF frames or integrated boxes; external or temporary routing is prohibited .
  • Neat, aesthetic cabling improves accessibility and reduces the risk of damage during maintenance . 3. Integration with Splitters: Splitters can be factory-installed in panels or enclosures with connectors like LC, SC, or E2000. This modular approach allows easy addition of splitters and high-density deployment while maintaining organized patching .

Summary

Effective PON deployment relies on selecting the appropriate splitter type and architecture (centralized or cascaded) and following strict fiber patching standards. PLC splitters are preferred for uniform large splits, while FBT splitters are suitable for smaller or customized splits. Proper patch cable management ensures minimal signal loss, easy maintenance, and long-term network reliability .
