Overview

An optical grating fiber system integrates gratings into optical fibers, creating a wavelength-specific reflector or filter. These gratings are formed by inducing a periodic variation in the refractive index of the fiber core, typically using ultraviolet (UV) laser light. This periodic structure allows the fiber to reflect certain wavelengths while transmitting others, based on the Bragg condition, where the grating period is approximately half the wavelength of the reflected light .

Types of Fiber Gratings

  1. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG):
    • Features a short, uniform periodic structure spanning a few millimeters.
    • Reflects a narrow band of wavelengths, acting as a precise mirror for a specific light color.
    • Widely used in telecommunications for signal processing and in structural health monitoring due to its sensitivity to strain and temperature .
  2. Long Period Grating (LPG):
    • Has a longer grating period, with variations spaced hundreds of micrometers apart.
    • Couples specific wavelengths from the fiber core into the cladding, effectively removing them from the main signal.

Fabrication Techniques

Gratings are typically inscribed by exposing a photosensitive fiber core to a patterned UV laser beam. Early methods used visible lasers along the fiber axis, while modern techniques employ transverse holographic inscription, where the interference pattern of UV light creates precise periodic structures . The resulting grating is durable and integrated directly into the fiber, allowing for compact and robust systems.
