Principles of Signal Combination

Fiber optic sensors measure physical quantities by modulating light parameters such as intensity, wavelength, phase, or polarization within the fiber system . When multiple sensors are used, their outputs can be optically or electronically combined:

  • Addition: Signals from two or more sensors are combined to produce a cumulative effect. For example, in strain monitoring, the reflected wavelengths from multiple Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) can be summed to represent total strain over a structure .
  • Subtraction: Differential sensing is achieved by subtracting one sensor signal from another. This is useful for compensating environmental effects like temperature, where one sensor measures strain plus temperature and another measures only temperature. Subtracting the two isolates the strain component .

Techniques for Implementation

  1. Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs): FBGs reflect specific wavelengths that shift with strain or temperature. By using multiple FBGs along a fiber, their reflected signals can be added or subtracted electronically after photodetection to obtain cumulative or differential measurements .
  2. Interferometric Sensors: Sensors like Mach-Zehnder or Sagnac interferometers produce phase-modulated signals. Phase outputs from multiple interferometers can be combined using optical couplers to perform addition or subtraction, enhancing sensitivity or rejecting common-mode noise .
  3. Multiplexing: Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) allows multiple sensors to operate on the same fiber. Signals can be digitally processed to perform addition or subtraction for distributed sensing applications .
