Optical Switch SC Port

Most modern optical switches do not have native SC ports; they primarily use LC ports, while SC connectors are mostly found in legacy or specialized applications.

SC vs LC on Optical Switches

Modern optical switches, especially those using SFP, SFP+, or QSFP transceivers, primarily feature LC ports due to their smaller size, higher port density, and compatibility with contemporary high-speed optics (1G, 10G, 25G, and beyond) . The LC connector uses a 1.25 mm ferrule and a push-pull latch, allowing dense port arrangements on 1U or 2U switches .

SC connectors, on the other hand, use a larger 2.5 mm ferrule with a simple push-pull locking system. They are less common on modern switches because their larger size limits port density . SC ports are still widely used in:

  • FTTH/ISP networks: GPON/EPON OLT and ONU modules often use SC connectors for field robustness .
  • Legacy or industrial networks: Older simplex or bidirectional transceivers may use SC ports .
  • Test equipment or specialized applications: Some lab or industrial switches may include SC ports for compatibility with existing infrastructure .

Connecting SC Cables to LC Ports

If your optical switch has LC ports but your cabling uses SC connectors, you cannot plug an SC cable directly into an LC port because the SC connector is physically larger. You can use LC-to-SC hybrid patch cords or adapter couplers to bridge the connection while maintaining proper fiber mode and polish type (UPC or APC) .

Practical Recommendation

  • For new deployments, LC ports are standard and recommended for high-density switches.
  • For existing SC infrastructure, consider using SC SFP modules (if supported) or LC-to-SC adapters to maintain compatibility without recabling .
  • Always verify the fiber mode (single-mode or multimode) and polish type to ensure minimal insertion loss and optimal signal quality .

In summary, SC ports are generally not present on modern optical switches, but they remain relevant in legacy, FTTH, or specialized applications, and adapters or hybrid cables can bridge the gap when needed.
