Sealing of Vertical Openings in Cable Trays

Cable tray vertical openings should be sealed using fire-rated, watertight, and modular systems to ensure safety, environmental protection, and maintainability.

Firestopping Requirements

Cable trays passing through walls, slabs, or shafts must be sealed with firestopping materials to prevent the spread of fire and smoke. Openings should be tightly sealed without visible cracks or voids, and large openings may require a fire-resistant backing plate before sealing. Common fire protection materials include fire-rated boards, firestop packs, firestop mastic, and fire-resistant mineral wool. Gaps between firestop packs and cables should not exceed 1 cm², and packing thickness should be at least 24 cm. Cover plates should be square, consistent in size, and properly painted to close the opening effectively .

Weatherproofing and Environmental Sealing

Vertical penetrations must also be weathertight to prevent water, gas, or dust ingress. Systems like WSP weatherstops use a steel frame with water-resistant pads and silicone-based sealants to provide a durable seal around cable trays. These units can accommodate any cable size and quantity, are suitable for outdoor and wet environments, and allow easy cable maintenance without additional parts . Similarly, Roxtec modular seals offer protection against fire, water, and gas, with flexible designs that allow for future cable additions or changes, reducing labor and installation time .

Modular and Flexible Solutions

For industrial or utility applications, modular systems such as SLIPSIL Sealing Plugs, RISE® System, and NOFIRNO® Duct Seal System provide fire-safe, gas-tight, and watertight sealing. These systems use expanding rubber inserts and sealants to adapt to multiple cable diameters and configurations. They are designed for quick installation, minimal maintenance, and high reliability in harsh environments . Split-frame or cast-in sleeve systems can also be used for retrofitting existing penetrations without removing cables.

Installation Considerations

  • Ensure floor and wall finishes are completed before sealing.
  • Maintain reasonable layout and positioning to facilitate installation and future maintenance.
  • Use joint-free or modular systems to prevent leaks and thermal breaks.
  • Verify that the sealing system is compliant with fire, water, and environmental standards relevant to the project. By combining firestopping, weatherproofing, and modular sealing solutions, cable tray vertical openings can be effectively protected against fire, water, gas, and other hazards while allowing for future cable modifications and maintenance .
