Methods for Measuring Fiber Optic Breakage with an Optical Power Meter

Use an optical power meter with a reference source to measure signal loss and locate fiber breaks by comparing measured power against expected levels.

Step 1: Prepare the Equipment

  • Clean all connectors and adapters on the fiber, power meter, and light source using lint-free wipes and fiber cleaning solution to prevent false loss readings .
  • Select the correct wavelength on the power meter to match the light source (commonly 850 nm, 1300 nm for multimode, or 1310/1550 nm for singlemode), .
  • Allow the power meter to stabilize after turning it on, usually 1–2 minutes, for accurate readings .

Step 2: Establish a Reference

  • Connect a known good reference patch cord directly from the light source to the power meter.
  • Set the meter to 0 dB or record the absolute power in dBm; this serves as your baseline for measuring loss along the fiber .

Step 3: Measure the Fiber Link

  • Connect the fiber under test between the light source and the power meter.
  • Read the optical power at the far end. The difference between the reference and measured power indicates total link loss, including connectors and splices .
  • Test from both directions if possible, as connector geometry can affect readings and reveal damaged endfaces .

Step 4: Detect Breaks

  • A complete break will result in a very low or zero reading on the power meter.
  • For visual confirmation, use a Visual Fault Locator (VFL): inject a red laser into the fiber; a bright glow indicates a break, while dim light may indicate severe bends .
  • Compare measured loss against the link budget; excessive loss suggests a break, bend, or faulty splice .

Step 5: Document and Troubleshoot

  • Record the power readings, wavelength, and serial number of the meter for future reference .
  • Measure at every patch panel or splice point to localize the break or high-loss section.
  • If a drop is detected, inspect connectors, splices, or fiber segments for damage and clean or repair as needed . By following these steps, an optical power meter can effectively quantify signal loss and help locate fiber breaks, ensuring reliable fiber optic network performance.
