Optical module sampling is the process of capturing and analyzing high-speed optical signals using optical modules and sampling oscilloscopes to convert optical pulses into discrete electrical data points for measurement and waveform reconstruction.

Overview

Optical module sampling involves using an optical module, a core component in optical communication systems, to convert optical signals into electrical signals for analysis . These modules contain optoelectronic devices, functional circuits, and optical interfaces, enabling photoelectric and electro-optical conversion. At the transmitting end, electrical signals are converted into optical signals, while at the receiving end, optical signals are converted back into electrical signals for measurement .

Sampling Process

The sampling process is performed using a sampling oscilloscope, often integrated into optical modules like the Keysight N1030A or Yokogawa AQ7750 . Unlike real-time oscilloscopes, a sampling oscilloscope captures one sample per trigger event and reconstructs the waveform over multiple cycles. Each sample represents the amplitude of the optical signal at a specific instant, and successive samples are combined to form a complete waveform . This method allows measurement of ultra-high-speed optical signals, including pulse widths as short as 2 picoseconds and data rates up to 160 Gbit/s .
