Classification of Outdoor Optical Cables

Outdoor optical cables are classified based on structure, installation method, and fiber arrangement, including loose tube, armored, micro, ribbon, GYTS, and ADSS types.

1. Based on Cable Structure

Loose Tube Cables: These cables encase optical fibers in gel-filled buffer tubes, providing protection against moisture, temperature extremes, and mechanical stress. They are ideal for long-haul, high-fiber-count applications and can be installed in ducts, aerially, or buried directly . Armored Cables: Designed for enhanced mechanical protection, armored cables include a metal or non-metallic layer (steel or aluminum) to resist rodent attacks, crushing, and environmental hazards. They are suitable for direct-burial or exposed installations . Micro Cables: Ultra-compact cables with diameters of 1–2 mm, allowing high fiber density in tight spaces. They are lightweight and flexible, suitable for congested conduits, LANs, and building connections . Ribbon Cables: Fibers are arranged in flat, ribbon-like structures, often in multiples of 12 or 24, enabling fast mass fusion splicing. These are used where large numbers of fibers need to be terminated efficiently .

2. Based on Installation Method

GYTS (Gyta Type with Steel Wire Strength): The most common outdoor cable, featuring a stranded loose-tube design with a central steel wire for tensile strength. Suitable for telecom backbones, metro access, FTTH feeder, and long-distance transmission. Can be installed in ducts, aerially with a messenger, or direct-burial with armor . ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting): A premium aerial cable with no metal components, allowing installation on high-voltage power lines without electrical interference. Reinforced with aramid yarn and FRP rods for tensile strength .

3. Based on Fiber Core Arrangement

Single-Mode Fiber Cables: Optimized for long-distance transmission with minimal signal loss, commonly used in backbone networks. Multimode Fiber Cables: Suitable for short-distance connections, such as campus networks or building interconnects, offering cost-effective deployment .

Summary

Outdoor optical cables are classified by structure (loose tube, armored, micro, ribbon), installation method (GYTS, ADSS), and fiber type (single-mode, multimode). Each classification addresses specific environmental challenges, including UV exposure, moisture, temperature variations, mechanical stress, and rodent protection, ensuring reliable performance in outdoor deployments .
