Structure and Composition

Optical fiber cables consist of a core, where light signals travel, surrounded by a cladding layer that reflects light back into the core using total internal reflection. The core is typically made of highly transparent glass or plastic, with diameters ranging from 9 microns for single-mode fibers to 50–62.5 microns for multimode fibers . The cladding is coated with protective layers of acrylate polymer or polyimide, and the entire assembly is enclosed in a jacket for mechanical protection .

Transmission Properties

Optical fibers transmit data as pulses of light, generated by lasers or LEDs, allowing extremely high bandwidth and low latency. Single-mode fibers (OS1/OS2) support long-distance transmission up to 40 km at speeds of 10 Gbps, while multimode fibers (OM4/OM5) can handle 40–100 Gbps over shorter distances . Signal loss, measured in decibels (dB), is minimal, with modern fibers having 1 dB/km at 1300 nm for multimode fibers .
