How to use a vertical optical fiber splice package

Installing a vertical optical fiber splice involves careful preparation, precise alignment, and protective housing to ensure a low-loss, reliable connection.

Step 1: Prepare the Splice Module

Begin by positioning the splice cassette or module vertically according to your fiber plan. Ensure it is mechanically secured and that cable entries are prepared for strain relief. Modern splice modules organize fibers, protect connections, and maintain bending radius limits, which is critical for vertical installations to prevent signal loss or fiber damage .

Step 2: Prepare the Fiber Cables

  • Strip the outer jacket of the fiber cable (typically 1–3 meters) to expose the buffer or loose tubes .
  • Separate individual fibers and clean them thoroughly with lint-free wipes and 99% isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and oils .
  • Use a high-precision cleaver to cut the fiber ends at a perfect 90-degree angle, ensuring a flat, mirror-like surface for optimal light transmission .

Step 3: Perform the Splice

You can choose between mechanical splicing or fusion splicing: Mechanical Splice

  • Insert the prepared fiber ends into a mechanical splice connector or sleeve.
  • Align the fibers precisely using the alignment device.
  • Apply index-matching gel to reduce signal loss and back reflection .
  • This method is suitable for quick field installations or temporary connections. Fusion Splice
  • Place each fiber in the V-groove of a fusion splicer, ensuring clamps face upward .
  • The splicer uses an electric arc to fuse the fibers, creating a permanent, continuous optical path with minimal attenuation (~0.1 dB), .
  • Inspect the cleaved ends under a microscope before splicing to confirm proper alignment and surface quality.

Step 4: Protect the Splice

  • Slide a heat-shrink splice protection sleeve over the joint before splicing.
  • After fusion, shrink the sleeve using the splicer's internal oven or a heat source to provide mechanical strength and protect the fragile fiber junction .

Step 5: Organize and Secure Fibers

  • Lay service loops at defined lengths to accommodate future maintenance.
  • Sort fibers according to the connection plan and attach intermediate fixings to prevent slippage.
  • Ensure bending radius limits are maintained, especially in vertical installations, to avoid microbends that increase attenuation .

Step 6: Test and Document

  • Measure attenuation and insertion loss to verify splice quality.
  • Document the splice location, fiber IDs, and test results for future maintenance .
  • Regular inspections can detect early issues and prevent network failures. By following these steps, a vertical optical fiber splice can be installed efficiently, providing a low-loss, durable connection suitable for data centers, telecom networks, or municipal fiber deployments .
