Trenching and Depth Requirements

Trenches for direct-buried fiber optic cables are typically 1–1.2 meters (3–4 feet) deep, with deeper burial in areas subject to frost or extreme cold. For road or driveway crossings, directional boring can be used to minimize surface disruption. Protective conduit or innerduct may be installed in high-risk areas to prevent crushing or accidental excavation damage . Recommended cover depths may vary depending on local regulations, but additional protection such as armored cable or warning tape is advised if shallower burial is necessary .

Cable Handling

Fiber optic cables are sensitive to excessive pulling force, sharp bends, and crushing. Cables should be unreeled using a figure-eight configuration to prevent kinking or twisting, with loops approximately 1.5–2.4 meters in diameter and 4.5 meters in length. Continuous coiling should be avoided for lengths over 30 meters (100 ft), . Bend Radius and Tensile Load

Respect the minimum bend radius and maximum rated cable load (MRCL) specified by the manufacturer.
