What is a Protective Relay

A protective relay is an intelligent electrical device designed to monitor electrical quantities such as current, voltage, frequency, and power in a system. When it detects a fault or abnormal condition, it sends a signal to trip a circuit breaker, alarm an operator, or block operations to prevent damage to equipment like transformers, generators, motors, and transmission lines . Relays do not interrupt current directly; they rely on instrument transformers (CTs and PTs) to sense system parameters and then command breakers to isolate the faulted section .

Working Principle

Protective relays operate through a decision chain: sensing → relay logic → trip output → breaker operation → isolation. The relay continuously monitors the system, compares measured values against preset thresholds, and acts when conditions exceed safe limits. For example, in a short circuit, the relay detects excessive current and closes its contacts to energize the breaker trip coil, isolating the fault .

Types of Protective Relays

Relays can be classified based on the quantity they monitor or their operating principle:

  • Overcurrent Relays (ANSI 50/51): Operate when current exceeds a set value; 50 is instantaneous, 51 is time-delayed .
  • Voltage Relays (ANSI 27/59): Detect under-voltage or over-voltage conditions .
  • Differential Relays (ANSI 87): Compare currents entering and leaving equipment to detect internal faults .
  • Multifunction Relays (ANSI 11): Combine multiple protective functions in one device . Suffix letters in ANSI/IEEE numbering provide additional context, e.g., G for ground (51G for ground overcurrent), T for transformer differential (87T), or N for neutral-related protection (59N), .

Applications

Protective relays are used on feeders, transformers, buses, motors, generators, and transmission lines to improve system reliability and minimize damage during faults.
