Basic Structure of Optical Fiber Sensors

An optical fiber sensor consists of a core, cladding, and coating, utilizing the principles of total internal reflection to detect various physical parameters.

Basic Structure of Optical Fiber

  1. Core: The core is the central part of the optical fiber where light travels. It is typically made of glass or plastic and has a higher refractive index than the surrounding cladding. The diameter of the core usually ranges from 10 to 50 micrometers .
  2. Cladding: Surrounding the core, the cladding has a lower refractive index, which helps to keep the light confined within the core through total internal reflection. This structure minimizes light loss and allows for efficient transmission of signals .
  3. Coating (Buffer): The outer layer, often made of plastic, protects the fiber from physical damage and environmental factors. It also provides additional mechanical strength to the fiber .

Working Principle

Optical fiber sensors operate by modulating the light traveling through the fiber. The basic components of an optical fiber sensing system include:

  • Light Source: Provides the initial light signal.
  • Optical Fiber: Transmits the light signal.
  • Sensing Element (Transducer): Modulates the light based on the physical quantity being measured (e.g., temperature, pressure, strain) .
  • Detector: Captures the modulated light signal and converts it into an electronic signal for processing .

Types of Optical Fiber Sensors

  1. Intrinsic Sensors: These sensors are integrated into the fiber itself, where the fiber's properties change in response to the measurand (the quantity being measured). The light transmission characteristics are directly affected by the external conditions .
  2. Extrinsic Sensors: In this type, the sensing element is external to the fiber. The fiber simply transmits the light to and from the sensing element, which modulates the light based on the measured parameter .
