Fibre Channel Interface Types

Fibre Channel interfaces include physical ports (F, E, TE, SD, NP) and virtual interfaces, connecting servers and storage in SANs via HBAs and SFP transceivers.

Physical Fibre Channel Interfaces

Physical Fibre Channel interfaces are hardware ports on switches, storage arrays, or Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) that enable high-speed data transfer in Storage Area Networks (SANs). Each interface can operate in different port modes:

  • F Port (Fabric Port): Connects a single node (server or storage device) to a Fibre Channel switch, forming part of the fabric.
  • E Port (Expansion Port): Connects two Fibre Channel switches to expand the fabric.
  • TE Port (Trunk Expansion Port): Used in certain switch configurations to carry multiple VSANs over a single link.
  • SD Port (Self-Discovered Port): Automatically discovers and connects to other ports in specific topologies.
  • NP Port (N-Port Proxy): Operates in NPV (N-Port Virtualization) mode, allowing a switch to act as a proxy for multiple endpoints . Physical interfaces are typically connected via optical fiber or copper cables using SFP or SFP+ transceivers, which convert electrical signals to optical signals and support speeds from 4 Gbps up to 64 Gbps .

Host Bus Adapters (HBAs)

HBAs are dedicated hardware components installed in servers to provide a physical and logical interface to the Fibre Channel network. They can be single-port, dual-port, or quad-port for redundancy and performance. Each HBA has a World Wide Name (WWN) for unique identification in the SAN .

Virtual Fibre Channel Interfaces

Virtual Fibre Channel interfaces allow Fibre Channel traffic to be carried over Ethernet networks using Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). These virtual interfaces are associated with a single VSAN and support only F mode. They share configuration commands with physical interfaces but have limitations, such as no support for SAN port channels or VSAN trunking .

I/O Modules

In storage arrays, I/O modules handle data communication between storage controllers and connected devices. They may include multiple FC ports (4, 8, or 16 per module) and support high-speed data transmission, redundancy, and scalability .

Summary

Fibre Channel interfaces are categorized into physical and virtual types, with physical interfaces supporting multiple port modes (F, E, TE, SD, NP) and virtual interfaces enabling FCoE connectivity. Key components include HBAs, SFP transceivers, and I/O modules, all working together to ensure high-speed, reliable, and scalable SAN connectivity .
