Overview of Bit Error Testing

Bit Error Rate (BER) testing evaluates the number of bits received incorrectly compared to the total transmitted bits over a given period.   • PSS BERT17442: Supports 10G–32G per channel, with 4-channel PPG and ED receivers.   • BERT800 (Dimension Technology): Flexible platform supporting 100G–800G modules, NRZ/PAM4 signaling, multiple PRBS patterns, and FEC. It is suitable for mass production, performance verification, and reliability testing, with modular interface boards to reduce long-term costs .

Testing Methodology

  1. Setup: Connect the optical module to the BERT using the appropriate interface (QSFP, SFP+, etc.).
  2. Pattern Selection: Choose a pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) pattern to stress the module and detect errors.
  3. Transmission: Send the test pattern through the module at the desired data rate.
  4. Error Detection: The BERT compares transmitted and received bits, counting errors and calculating BER.
  5. Analysis: Evaluate BER against acceptable thresholds. Advanced testers also monitor Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM) parameters like temperature, voltage, and optical power .
