Dual-egress backup involves connecting the core switch to two separate upstream devices or WAN links, so that if the primary egress path fails, traffic automatically reroutes through the secondary path. This design improves network resiliency and minimizes downtime for critical services .

Physical Redundancy

  • Link Aggregation (LAG/MC-LAG): Combine multiple physical interfaces into a single logical link to increase bandwidth and provide failover. Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation (MC-LAG) allows two core switches to act as a single logical unit, providing seamless failover if one switch or link fails .
  • VSX or Two-Tier Core: In Aruba or similar architectures, core switches can be configured as a VSX pair with inter-switch links (ISL) to maintain Layer 2 aggregation and routing continuity. If one core switch loses external connectivity, the other maintains egress traffic .
  • Hot-Swappable Components: Use core switches with redundant power supplies and fans to prevent downtime due to hardware failure .

Routing and Traffic Management

  • Primary/Secondary Egress: Configure routing protocols (e.g., BGP, EIGRP) to prefer one egress path while keeping the secondary path available. Metrics, local preference, or static routes can be used to manipulate traffic preference .
  • Failover Mechanisms: Active-passive or active-active configurations can be implemented. For example, FortiGate clusters with FGCP provide session-pickup and failover protection, ensuring ongoing TCP sessions are maintained during a switch or firewall failure .
  • Ingress and Egress Control: Use route manipulation (e.g., AS-prepend, local preference) to control which path is preferred for incoming and outgoing traffic, ensuring predictable failover behavior .

Implementation Steps

  1. Aggregate Physical Links: Configure LAGs or Eth-Trunks on the core switch to connect to both upstream devices or firewalls .
  2. Enable Multi-Chassis Redundancy: If using two core switches, configure MC-LAG or VSX to allow both switches to share traffic and provide failover .
  3. Configure Routing Preferences: Set primary egress via preferred WAN or upstream device and secondary as backup using routing metrics or local preference .
  4. Test Failover: Simulate link or switch failure to verify that traffic seamlessly reroutes to the backup path without session loss.
