Electromechanical Relay Pressure Plates

In electromechanical relays, pressure plates are part of the moving mechanism that responds to abnormal electrical conditions. These plates are actuated by electromagnetic forces generated by current or voltage in the relay coil. The main types include:

  • Rotating Disc Pressure Plates: Used in overcurrent and directional relays, the disc rotates under electromagnetic torque, moving the pressure plate to close contacts when the pickup value is reached .
  • Plunger or Solenoid-Actuated Plates: Found in relays where a linear motion is required, the solenoid pushes the plate to operate the contacts .
  • Spring-Loaded Plates: These plates are held in position by springs and move when the electromagnetic force overcomes the spring tension, providing adjustable pickup and reset characteristics .
  • Gear-Linked Mechanical Plates: In some mechanical relays, pressure plates are connected to gears or levers that amplify small movements of the relay coil into sufficient motion to operate contacts .

Static and Numerical Relays

While static relays and numerical (digital) relays do not use physical pressure plates, they emulate the function electronically. In these relays, the "pressure plate" concept is replaced by semiconductor switches or microprocessor-controlled logic that triggers the relay contacts .

Functional Considerations

The type of pressure plate affects the speed, sensitivity, and reliability of the relay. For example:

  • Instantaneous relays use lightweight plates for rapid operation.
  • Time-delay relays may use heavier or spring-damped plates to introduce intentional delays . Understanding these types is crucial for designing, maintaining, and coordinating protective relays in power systems, ensuring fast and reliable fault detection and isolation .
