Single-fiber bidirectional and single-fiber single-mode

Single-fiber single-mode bidirectional (BiDi) technology enables simultaneous two-way data transmission over a single strand of single-mode fiber using different wavelengths.

Overview

Single-fiber bidirectional transmission allows both transmitting (TX) and receiving (RX) signals to travel on the same fiber strand, unlike traditional duplex systems that require two fibers—one for each direction . This is achieved using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), where each direction is assigned a distinct wavelength, such as 1310 nm for TX and 1550 nm for RX, with the complementary module on the other end reversing the wavelengths .

How It Works

Inside a BiDi SFP module, a WDM filter separates incoming and outgoing signals spectrally. The module converts electrical signals from a switch or router into optical signals at a specific wavelength for transmission, while simultaneously filtering and directing incoming optical signals at a different wavelength to the receiver . This allows full-duplex communication over a single fiber without interference.

Advantages

  • Fiber savings: Reduces fiber usage by 50%, which is critical in environments with limited fiber availability .
  • Cost efficiency: Lowers deployment costs by reducing cabling, trenching, and labor requirements .
  • Network flexibility: Simplifies network expansion and upgrades, especially in metropolitan area networks (MANs), telecom access networks, and enterprise campus links .
  • Compatibility: BiDi modules are compliant with SFP multi-source agreements (MSA), making them interoperable across vendors .

Applications

Single-fiber bidirectional technology is widely used in:

  • Enterprise networks where fiber resources are limited
  • Telecom access networks for cost-effective deployment
  • Legacy fiber routes where only one fiber pair exists, avoiding the need for new cabling

Considerations

  • Module pairing: BiDi SFP modules must be matched in complementary pairs (e.g., 1310TX/1550RX with 1550TX/1310RX) to prevent wavelength conflicts .
  • Design complexity: Requires careful wavelength management and protection configuration to avoid interference and optimize spectrum usage .
  • Distance limitations: Common wavelength pairs like 1310/1490 nm or 1310/1550 nm are suitable for short to medium distances (10–40 km), while 1490/1550 nm pairs are used for longer links (80–160 km), . Single-fiber single-mode bidirectional technology provides a practical, cost-effective solution for maximizing fiber utilization while maintaining reliable, high-speed communication.
