The overcurrent relay or the impedance relay protects the motor from an abnormal current due to short-to-ground faults and motor overload conditions. While this is bad, It's not a. Protection relays employ a wide range of configurable parameters to identify defects & trip the breaker in a controlled & selected manner. Understanding each setting facilitates proper relay coordination. This document supplements PJM Manual 07 which contains the minimum design standards and requirements for the protection systems associated with the bulk power facilities within PJM.
